Keep your stakeholders motivated

Stakeholder involvement is an essential component of BlueGreen Governance. We can only arrive at sustainable and effective solutions for land-sea issues by including stakeholders. Over the last few decades, many lessons have been learned regarding stakeholder processes. These lessons have been outlined in the run-up to the case study workshops and are gathered in chapter 6 in our Case Study Protocol.

Recommendations

We have highlighted a few recommendations regarding increasing effectiveness and combating participation fatigue.

  1. Effectiveness in engagement processes is related to building strong stakeholder relationships. Fostering trust, showing empathy, and being responsive to stakeholder dynamics and changing circumstances are key elements. Through an early engagement in the process, you can get a grip on stakeholders’ needs, expectations, and concerns.
  2. To keep the stakeholders interested, keep them informed of relevant project progress, milestones, and changes. To do so, it is important to outline specific communication strategies that consider the stakeholder’s time and other resource constraints. Make stakeholders aware of the channels they can use to provide punctual feedback and ensure that feedback will be considered and acted upon.
  3. To avoid participation fatigue, it is important to set realistic expectations in terms of the added value of their participation and their expected level of commitment. Through a tailored stakeholder communication strategy and a common timeline, you can avoid the stakeholder from feeling like they are wasting their time, and by promoting participation in decision-making processes and recognising contributions you can enhance motivation to remain engaged and committed to the project.
